Please don`t laugh at what is a very silly question.
I planted some onion seeds in my greenhouse and have now planted them in my back garden. Can some one tell me if i will get one onion fron each plant or a bunch like potatoes, also would it be possible to transplant them to my allotment once its dug over. They are about 5" tall at the moment.

Hi
No Onions you only get one bulb per plant what you are thinking of are shallots. Where you put one bulb in and they make 6 - 8 bulbs all round the original one.
They are lightly more delicate in flavour than onions - cost much more in the shops too and don't grow nearly as big as onions.
Good luck with your onions though and probably worth trying shallots next year!

I've transplanted onions from one place to another, gently and watering well afterwards, they need a fair amount of water to stop them bolting :)

well, we only water newly planted ones, we try not to water anything else, mulch the ground in winter with as much organic stuff as we can..so's it holds the moisture :)

thank you, that's good to know, I really don't want to get stuck on the watering treadmill ::)
onions and shallots were watered in when planted, then watered again a week later as they're just sitting in dust. they've started to grow though ;D

Once the onions are established let them find their own water, only water once a week if really dry, I was a slave to the watering can last year. Onions, parsnips, toms, spuds etc got overwatered and spoilt rotten, not this year, no more mister nice guy. :o ;D ;D ;D
