too late for shallots?
«

I only got a small packet of shallots and I love them so much. If I can find any more, am I too late to put them in?
The others went in in March.

No it is not too late. I did not start digging my plot until 17th March last year and put my shallots on about 30th March. See the fantastic results on:-

That's good - anyway if it's too late for them to do much, we can just dig them out in summer, store them till next year and try again.
okay all i have to do now is find some in a shop.
mine last year were all so neglected and dry they were about the size of small peas, so I don't think i should use them to sow this year!

if you have any of the cheap shops near to you (Poundland, Pound Stretcher, etc.) they may still have onion and shallot sets for sale, the shops in Norwich do.

I have just noticed that last years few shallots that remain are starting to sprout, so I am going to try an experiment, plant them and compare the results with the February and October plantings.

Bought some ½-price shallot sets yesterday evening at garden centre - for 99p it had to be worth a try. They can go into a spare bit of our onion bed and hope for the best.
Thinking about it, at that price we should have bought more, and kept them in the kitchen for cooking with! ;D

I went to morden hall garden centre today which is where i got the other shallots but they all sold out in January, as soon as they'd come in. They said they managed to get a couple of extra packets from somewhere but they sold straight out as well.
maybe i should go into seed shallot production... seems to be more demand than supply.
