I've interplanted with onions like Miniroots so we'll see if it works, another tip was thin out the carrots in the evening or on an overcast day and as the Scousers have said let them grow to finger size then use them in salads and leave the rest to grow, but will probably take Tims advise and throw a fleece over them, if the carrot fly still get in then its a flame thrower next year.  ;D ;D ;D

KEV. On reading your thread brought to mind some of the things i have done in the past to keep the dreaded fly away. Since i have grown them in the Polly tunnel i don,t have to bother any more. ( well not to much)
I have soaked rope in Jays fluid and laid it between the rows.
I have soaked rope in creosote laid on polythene strips between the rows.
i have sprayed the foliage with Jaye's fluid
I have not planted them till June after the fly is supposed to have gone ( no one told the fly it was supposed to be gone )
I have sown them in shallow trenches and back filled as the foliage grows so there was at least  3" of soil above the carrot top
I have even used mothballs.
I have used a combination of at least two of the above.

So you have to admit i am a trier.
