Planting Out
« on: April 16, 2007, 22:44:07 »
Hi

All

My cucumbers and tomatoes are doing really well (Too well) and i am worried they will be needing much bigger pots soon and therefore more space in my spare room.

Is it still too early to plant out and should i just keep potting them on to pots an inch bigger every couple of weeks or so.

Thanks

1. In the open, yes.

2. Only pot up when the roots fill the present pots. And then I would go up a good couple of inches.

PS - You could start hardening them off now - that would slow them down.

It would help to know where you are?  Unheated greenhouse? I would still harden off a bit.

I prefer to wait until mid-May at least. Even then, I cover with fleece because we get sharp frosts into June. Cus, especially, don't enjoy anything under 50F.

But better out with a risk than getting leggy & weak?

I have my Tomatoes out in the unheated greenhouse and yeh probably too early but didnt have room in the kitchen anymore.

They seem ok even with low temps.

Fingers crossed eh?!

Same here, with toms and peppers,Chris, but haven't risked my aubergines yet and only just sown cucumbers.

Yes - you can put them out BUT we have had 6 deg of frost at this time of year & it has still been 45F in the cold 'house in June!!

So long as they are covered, they'll survive but may not rush ahead.

These are ours. They are on a 60F capillary bed.

Not far from chris.

I live in Kirkcaldy, Fife

Have 2 toms in the greenhouse and 1 cucumber.  I had so many i thought i would leave a couple out and see.  They haven't died yet but they are not doing as well as the others that are in the house.

Mine seem to have had a growth spurt, really growing well.

Do you have any heating in your greenhouse chris.

My Cucumbers have started flowering now.  So I would like to plant out the flowers i have in the greenhouse and put my toms and cucs in.

I planted my toms in January and until mid April they were on a heated bed in my greenhouse. With the kind weather, that is now turned off and the plants are two and a half feet tall with flowers beginning to set. I did the same last year and had my first fruit on 2nd June. I am in the south so things are a little warmer.
