Onion Seeds????????????
« on: April 13, 2007, 10:02:09 »
I planted some onion seeds into trays a few weeks ago hoping they would grow into full sized onions this year but a neighbour  on the allotments has told my they won't mature until next year, is this right?

your neighbour definatley does not know their onions i grow from seed every year and swear that they bolt less then set ones   the result differs from year to year but then that applies to every thing and i think is down to the weather conditions
i hope you have a really good crop and the nighbours  onions all bolt then you can look really smug

I think you may have been a bit late in sowing them, its January for me.

There are some who say sow on shortest day harvest on longest, I would doubt the harvest date!!

I would say you will get a crop but the size/s might be a bit indifferent.

If the globe keeps on warming, i(t's 18 celcius in Liverpool at the moment) and you have rich soil and plenty of water you should manage onions the size of cricket balls at least.

I used to live in Newcastle where prize leeks and onions were a rage. The tradition was to plant them on Christmas Day, but you do not really want onions the size of footballs.

we have grown ours from seed and they do form large enough onions to eat, again not massive but still a good size, they dont keep as well as set grown onions though. but onions from seed allow a lot more varieties to be grown.
