its great to be on the allotment

here is an old photo of my dad and is brothers getting parsnips in the winter of 1963, the ground was froze solid for over three months and as you can see sledge hammers were being used to break the soil from around the parsnips. Sorry about the quality of the picture.

global warming is doing some good, then, you've got some amazing historical pictures there, richard..makes us realise how hard it was in those days :)
hard to believe it's only 44 years ago, I was 11..good grief, where's it all gone ? ;D

I was only 18mths in 63 but we all remembered it... being 800' up in the Pennines it stuck in the memory...

one of the old boys on my site was telling me about the winter of '63 the other day... he said the ground froze on Boxing Day night and didn't thaw until March and they had to pick axe their parsnips out of the ground too :o

I do recall that me and ickle bruv were at Nan and Bert's that winter, neck deep in snow. I was nearly 6. :P

Richard. I remember that winter. We used all our pennies to buy our first greengrocery shop in Norbury. What did customers ask? Are the cabbages FROZEN,? Through handling frozen veg all day I actually got frost bite in my hands...truth!!
