Busy Lizzie Seedlings
« on: March 30, 2007, 13:44:32 »
Hi,

I have some Busy Lizzies grown from seed. There are 3 varieties, 2 of which seem normal and compact, but the "Balsam Camellia" (double flower) ones are giants, and have also gone a little "leggy". When I pot them on (from small cells to small pots) can I bury the stem a little, like I do with tomatoes, or will this cause the stem to rot?

They were all grown in the same conditions (same cell tray!), but if the big ones keep growing like this then they'll need staking!!!!!

Pass, they are so small and fiddly we tend to get them as plugs...

That's why I'm so confused, Saddad.  ???...all the others are tiny....but these ones are huge!!!!  :o The seed leaves are at least as big as my thumb nail.

And there is no mix up with seeds....they are definately Busy Lizzies (first true leaves are through).

Might have to try burying a couple deeper when I pot-on, and see how they go.  :-\

Thanks.

As you say do fifty fifty and see which works best!
Can you nip out the growing tip to make bushier plants?

I think you have two types of Impatiens e.g.

The busy lizzie type http://tinyurl.com/yr47mr and the balsam type http://tinyurl.com/2s3njp

Yes bury stem up to seed leaves.

Be careful with watering & temperatures!!
