Topic: Lobelia - Germination

Does anyone know how long it takes for Lobelia to germinate.  I ask because i planted a tray on Saturday 13/03/07 at the same time as other plants which are sprouting. 

I followed the instructions the seeds have been sown on seed compost and not covered.

Am i impatient

I'm a bit confused by the date - fink it's the 13th today.  :) Are they in a heated propagator? If so they take about a week - if not I would expect them to take longer.  Silly little things aren't they - think I'll stick to buying plants next year though I have got some coming along nicely with about 5 thousand in each little pot - no idea how to thin them.

Yes i think you have your dates mixed at today is the 13th  ;D

Just wanted to say that i planted a variety of different seeds on Saturday too and already, i have my pumpkin, tomatoes and sweet peas showing but a few varieties of various plants have refrained to show yet so we will just have to be patient i guess, good luck  :)

Marymary - if I remember correctly, you prick out those tiny lobelia seedlings in little clumps, (say about the size of a 1p coin?), and - when they're grown-up a bit - plant out the clumps without splitting them up. (Somebody on here will surely give you the right advice if I'm wrong!  ;))

I couldn't help but notice the two 18's, what caused them to take so long do you think ?

Can't recall exactly but most likely 'old seed'

Thanks Grandam that's sort of what I've done with the first lot - will they grow properly beeing so many plants together.  I've planted a few more little pots & tried to sow them more thinly.

They grow fine, Marymary :) If you look at the ones sold in garden centres - in plastic/polysytrene cell-type things - I think you'll find they say to plant them out in the clumps - just as they come. I always used to do mine like this (for hanging baskets) and never had any problems. Best of luck!  ;D

Lobelia all doing well,  Not sure how to transplant.  about 1cm high and very compact 1000's have germinated.

Any ideas on when how to this

Also my upright stuff has started to wither away.

All still indoors and kept watered.

I gently take a pinch of seedlings, dibble a hole and transplant! see here;

mine took 5 days to germinate - my first ever non veg seeds, i cannot believe how tiny the seedlings are!
