Powdery Mildew on Verbena Seedlings
« on: March 19, 2007, 18:26:51 »
can anyone recommend a fungicide for use on Verbena seedlings ?

We bought a 'bargain' tray last week and potted them up into 3 inch individual pots. They are in a South facing cold Conservatory i.e. no artificial heat. Did not notice anything amiss when we potted up, but over last few days a white powdery 'fungus' has appeared on the tops of the leaves

thanks
Mikey

I can't recommend any chemicals but you could try either of the following:

5g of bicarbonate of soda, 10g soft soap to 1 litre of water

or

1 part full cream milk to 9 parts water

Spray all effective leaves until they are well wetted.  Repeat as necessary.

What's the ventilation like? Fungus thrives in damp stagnant air.

Robert,

plants are in a South facing cold conservatory, there are 2 side windows, double sliding doors and 4 roof vents which can all be manually opened, circulation has never been a problem. What has been hectic this last week/10 days is the variable weather/temp.

We have gone from -3C heavy frost, +3C snow on the ground, up to +12C (outside) and +25C in the conservatory, not quite all in one day but pretty close ha! ha! we have been running about like 'whirling dervishes' (well ... retired dervishes  ;)) trying to keep some kind of even temperature which of course means a good air circulation.

Oh you are welcome.  It was a tip I picked up from this site a couple of years back I think.   ;D
