Newbie moon phase gardener
« on: March 20, 2007, 13:48:10 »
Hi, I've just got my first allotment and I'm so excited  :D I have a small veg garden at home, but this is bigger so I can plant lots of interesting stuff. I'm keen on gardening by moon phase as i often go to Italy and thats how it's done there.
Just wondered what others thought about it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's interested in growing things this way.

Gardening by a full moon phase would probably get me arrested here in Gateshead. ;D ;D ;D.  I do believe it has its advantages, but couldn't tell you what they are ::) ;D

Yeah I've heard of this - planting by the phases of the moon, I even bought a calendar with all the info on it once just to try it out but as with all my gardening plans it all went out the window because the weather refused to cooperate

I'm really interested in this  :) An Italian allotment neighbour of mine, Dario, plants by the moon as a matter of course - it's how he's been taught to do it passed down through generations.

Interestingly enough, I was talking to my other neighbour Ahmed yesterday  (originally from Pakistan) and he was advocating the same thing.

Mind you ... he did say that his memory was absolutely terrible (worse than mine according to him! CHARMING!) and he never remembers to do it. Never mind the fact that all we have to do it look up at the evening sky to tell us what the moon is doing  :)

I'd like a chart of when the moon is waxing/waning by date though so I can remind myself and add this to the 'knowledge on the packet' as it were.

There is a bit here about it; http://tinyurl.com/yx3xcw

I never bother about it now simply because over the years through keeping diaries of what I did, I suppose I indirectly sow by the moon phases, but I still prefer the calendar I can see this when the weather is cloudy 8)

Great stuff, BB - but you have to have a measure of intelligence to use it? I find it quite daunting!

My only criticism is that one might be led into sowing eg Aubs now - afraid to miss the window - when it might be better to wait a while?

Hi Tim have found that following the info on the site you have ample windows for planting - not going out in the night though to start planting!!

And at least it is giving me a plan of some kind to follow as otherwise too many helpful people keep giving different advise.

Hi, I found this web site useful. I printed off the moon phases. I wonder if they apply to people?

www.users.on.net/~arachne/MoonPlanting.html

If so I should be feeling an upsurge in energy :D

Maybe i'm a potato that produces below ground and not a leafy plant that produces above ground ???

Makes you think ........

I'm attempting to use the moon phases this year. I tried it a couple of years ago but found it tricky to fit in my available time with it.  We shall see how it goes this year.  So far it's ok, and I am using one of thebooks available (can't remember the author), noting in it when I do everything.
I did have a look at the gardeners calender site, but found it a little confusing, especially since you only seem to be able to get a summary in advance, and the more detailed info only appears on the day in question. Not good for me as I don't have access at home.

Good luck with your planting, I was going to try a few experiments with it but I seem to think that's just going to complicate things too much!
