Newbie

Hi.

Just registered on the site and this is my first post, so I would like to say hello to everyone.

I haven't yet got an allotment plot, but am meeting a guy on Sunday who runs a site.  I was wondering if anyone has any tips on what I should look out for or ask.

Great forum by the way.  I can see this being a major source of information in the coming months and years.

Ian.

Hello to you and welcome to this extremely useful and friendly site, I'm fairly new myself

Questions??? I can only think of about a thousand...

Has the site got water?
Can I have a shed?
Is there any vandalism?
What's the soil like?
Where are the toilets?
Are there manure deliveries?
Is there rubbbish collection?
Can I grow swedes here?
What's the history of my plot?
Is there any club root, blight, spraing, rabbits etc?

well there's a few questions anyway - but I wouldn't worry you'll find it all out as you go along., just get your name down and start digging

I agree with all the above... and if you have a choice of plot think...

What is access like for car (deliverys)
Whats already growing on the plot (apple tree, fruit bushes - not weeds)
Whats been left behind (greenhouse... or just plenty of smashed glass)
What are the neighbours like
What are the neighbours plots like
Any flooding?
How far do you have to walk to things... ie manure from a trailer, water etc
.... and also what CANT you plant i.e. trees, hedges...

Ask them if you can have a copy of the site rules too.

Needless to say though - you'll probably be so excited and eager to get going you'll just take it anyway!  ;D ;D ;D  Have fun!!!

Thanks for the very helpful points.  Plenty to think about and ask when I go to the allotment for the first time.

But as you said, I just want to get digging, so anything will do me!
