Hens and Dogs
« on: March 10, 2007, 23:21:06 »
Hi this may seem like a silly question. I love hens and at some time wish to keep a few.  I have a rottweiler (Gentle Giant) i am sure he wont attack the birds but will the birds be in a constant state of fear each time he is around.

Free all hens from batteries and pay a bit extra for free range.

Your dog should be ok the hens won't bother,
the only trouble will be if he tries to go for them
best to introduce him to them but on his lead.

Hi my missus fosters greyhounds and lurchers for a charity. We constantly have 4+ dogs in the house and have a mini flock of 11 hens.

from my experience if the dog doesnt go for the hens the hens will ignore the dog unless you nail some food to its collar ;D

Our own dogs come into the pen with us and the worst incident weve had after 3 years is a pecked dog and a rat hunted down and killed!
