Hi Biscombe.  I'm trying them for the first time this year.  The botanical name is Ipomoea Alba.  I find Ipomoeas in general grow very easily here in London and I treat them as hardy annuals rather than half-hardy annuals, and simply throw a good pinch of them on the sunny border where I want them to grow!  They often self-seed too.  As far as I know they are not too fussy about soil type.
