Topic: Aubergines - but no fruit!

[Two Choices]

I'm trying to decide whether to have another go this year after two dismal years where the seeds germinated well, the plants grew healthily to a couple of feet, then a few flowers came but as the fruit just started to form and swell  they fell off.

Am I doing something terribly wrong?  They were in my greenhouse where I had a cracking year for toms.  Any advice appreciated, TC  ???

we grew ours in black buckets last year, our mate nick said they were best like this..he was right, much better than when we planted them in the ground  ;D

Poor pollination comes to mind? My last two years have been dismal for aubies indoors but `Thai Green` and `Rosa Bianca`have done well outside.

I`m on the Lincs/Cambs border free draining soil, west facing and given cloche protection for their first few weeks after leaving the greenhouse

We average 20-30 fruit per plant, in a cold 'house in grow bags, with no fussing.

Outdoors, as Stephan says, the Thai Long Green type seem to do best.  With a bit of protection - we're 650' up.

How many plants per growbag?  I suspect I may have not used large enough pots. Thanks to all for your comments. TC

Certainly no more than 2. They grow very broad.

I prefer to use 1/2 bags, topped up with compost, &well spaced.

NOT what it says on some bags - like 3!!

Mine did the same as yours too. I was thinking of putting in our hot house we brought this year, good or bad idea?

Ive never grown them before but got myself some seeds from real seeds. They are named "diamond"the catalogue say's that they are well adapted to cooler shorter summers. We will see eh!. After seeing Tims lovely aubergines I had to give it a go.

Maybe it was pollination, grew some last year for the first time but outside and was pleased to get fruit.
