Cold frame
« on: February 28, 2007, 20:02:48 »
Having removed a secondary double glazed window to replace it with a permanent one, I find myself with a large aluminium frame with a hardwood surround, dimensions approx, 6'x4'. With this comes 3 panes of glass, each also with a metal frame, which fit in and slide back and forth.

Do you think this would make a workable top for a cold frame, or is it too big?
Grow your own and enjoy the fruits of your labours,
Regards Alan.

Good, just got to go and get some B&Q gravel boards* and some 2"x2" to make the body of it, or at least the panels, or I'll never get it in the car to take it up the plot.

*B&Q gravel boards are thicker than those from Wickes, and they are the nearest to me, apart from Jewson, and they're too expensive.

It sounds ideal as you won't have to lift it up to get inside.
I think cold frames are really useful and yours will be big enough to get loads of seedlings inside.

I made mine out of;

Left over breeze blocks from the house extension (20 years ago)

Old green house glazing bars from a greenhouse that accidently burned down and the glass is ex-secondary glazing from when we changed to double glazing.

Even the sand & cement was left over from the extension.

This is it as it is today;

This is it in Spring;

This it in summer
