Alcoholic slugs..
« on: February 26, 2007, 17:20:11 »
If I marinade some slugs in beer, would they be safe to leave out for birds to eat? I know capsaicin from chillis doesn't have any effect on birds - anyone know whether alcohol does?

I always empty my beer traps out on the soil - if the birds eat them it does not do them any harm and the rest just feed the soil. :)

Just watch the birds dont start any trouble. Robins can be particularly violent after a few slugs of beer. Only last week a gang of three inebriated robins beat up a thrush on my plot.

Actually, we have well-fed slugs here, as they've been on homebrew mead. Strong enough to knock me out, never mind the slugs.. ;)

Have you ever watched birds getting tipsy on rotten apples? I have a neighbour who just lets windfalls stay where they fall and some sunny autumn afternoons the birds get as bad as the brawl scene from the end of Blazing Saddles.  ;D

Years ago when my son was little & we were on holiday in Scotland he got tipsy on cherries which must have been fermenting on a tree.  The owner of the cottage told us about it the next day - too late but he slept like a log for 12 hours!
