Ladybirds
« on: March 01, 2007, 12:48:46 »
I've noticed a lot of ladybirds at the allotment this week. Today I found some more hiding in the bean poles (which I haven't taken down yet). We always have a few ladybirds around each year but so far in the last two days I've seen a lot more than usual. Last year I grew a lot of flowers for companion planting reasons and I'm wondering if that's why there are so many more ladybirds this year, or is it just a good year for them, anyone else seen more than usual?

Let's hope there are enough aphids for them to feed on this year; they really struggled last spring.

Robert it's not every day you hear someone asking for enough aphids but I have to agree you are right. I despair when people use chemicals on their plants but usually they are killing the food for these beneficial insects. Best to strike a happy balance.

found some greenfly on my sage cuttings in the greenhouse this week and a ladybird so it's got a small food source  :)

No chemicals are used on my allotment so there's no danger of their food being poisoned. :)

Another beautiful picture.  Is it a very special camera to get such close up pics?

not special Flossie, just an average priced digital camera (Sony H1) but with a macro button for close-ups. :)
