Topic: Apple tree....am i too late

Have i left it too late to prune my apple tree. ???

I don't know for sure whether it's too late, but I had no idea how to prune our one, so my mum did it for me(she's a very experienced gardener), just about a fortnight ago.

Ours is only a little one (around5ft tall), and currently planted in a large container in the garden. It's an eating apple called Greensleeves.

Just do it, you won't do any harm.

If the buds have not broken yet (ie showing no colour) then you will be ok.
I prune mine as and when I have the time, the energy, the inclination and when passing along the rows with secateurs.

I hope not, I have some very large trees to start on tomorrow if there is not too much wind. Provided the buds have not started to break you are OK. Do remember though the more you cut in the spring the more growth you get, if possible the best pruning for crops is summer pruning.

bob flowerdew reckons it's best to prune when the flowers are showing, so's you don't prune the fruit off  ;D
