What a load of rubbish....
« on: January 24, 2007, 21:57:51 »
I have bought a book I thought would answer the majority of my fruit growing queries. How wrong was I...

Complete Fruit Book by Bob Flowerdew I think it is very poor with not much information on fruits. Though it covers most fruits in small quantities I am disappointed.

Can anyone recommend any better books on growing, harvesting, & problems with British grown fruits?

You will get different views in different books, depending on the author. I find using the internet gives me up to date information, but it is still a case of 'perm any eight from ten'. At least as new ideas come to light, you know about them before they are put into print by the 'experts'.

As you find good information, save and print. Then you can have your own book.

The Fruit Expert by D.G. Hessayon ? but may not be in depth enough ? The vegatable one of the series is a very good all round book.

I haven't really majored on fruit yet kaytee. But any of the real post-war fusties will go into graphic detail, with photos and diagrams, although may not be bang up to date.
You can often get them very cheap second hand on Amazon.
I particularly like A G Hellyer, Your Garden Week By Week, recommended by Moonbells, it's an absolute joy.

I've been googling all the fruit we're growing so I'm doing my own book, as ace says, it's a good way to get lots of views  ;D ;D

Have a look at Ken Muir's website. There's advice on pruning and diseases as well as descriptions of the varieties they sell.

http://www.kenmuir.co.uk/ and it's in the Ask Ken section.
