Mulching
« on: April 28, 2004, 17:04:45 »
Well, the question had to come up at some point!!  What do you all use to mulch your Veg with? I am eyeing up my cabbages, garlic and onions, and wondering what to put on them, whether I should bother, and what everyone else does!  My sweetcorn I use weed supressing membrane which works well, I don't have enough compost or manure that I can use, so any suggestions? (not straw tho as I have that on my paths and it finally gets lobbed into the soil anyhow!)  Thanks Dottie P.

Hi Doris,

not much help to you -but I tend to use compost when I have it (from a large hedge & lawn thatch/clippings mainly). In the winter I used leaves on my raised beds. I have also used lawn clippings neat on top of newspaper which seemed to work ok.

The birds like throwing all of these around at home -less so on the allotment. The went mad on some bark over newspaper -I don't know what was under it but there's shredded paper and bark all over the lawn now.
