Topic: Tree help please

Due to an oil leak in our garden we are having most of it removed and will be starting from scratch.  We have only a small back garden but I would like a tree in there down the end to give us some height and interest.  Ideally one that doesn't grow taller than about 20 foot with a nice spread to sit under in the summer, but as it will be fairly near the house without invading and damaging roots and one that won't take over?  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks

Have a look at one of the many forms of Sorbus (Mountain ash) or just as good a Crab apple.

I would agree with that. Rowans are great for not taking up too much room. They also provide food for the birds.

I think I would go for a fruit tree of some sort, this way you get the tree plus flowers & fruit.

Just make sure the tree is not on dwarfing root stock if you want it to grow to 20Ft

A quince or Black Mulberry would do the job... but the Mulberry won't give you the height for quite a long time

Yes, but Mulberries have a rather thicker crown than would be wanted in a small garden.
You could also check out Eucryphia and Stewartia. Both of these are small trees with beautiful blossom. They need sheltered site so we cannot grow them sadly.
