Topic: Another casualty of the wind !

My polycarb g/h took a direct hit over Christmas/New Year.

I've managed to get one side reglazed by using the end panels, so now I have a wind tunnel (and no it was nothing to do with all the full English breakfasts we had while we were away).  :P

Question:  How do I cut solid polycarb sheeting ?  I don't particular want to buy whole new sheets and there seems to enough undamaged to redo some of the end panels.

Would a jigsaw do the job ?  Any tips much appreciated.

Any fine toothed saw should work, I would be inclined to use a normal hacksaw blade manually and take your time.

Hint, if you have pieces of wood either side of your cut line, to hold the sheet while you are cutting, it should stop the polyc flapping while you are cutting.

Definatley stick with the manual hacksaw. Anything larger or electrical saw could cause it to crack either side of the cut.

Remind me.... MIL had me reseal and glaze a lean to conservatory that was letting in water over the summer.... heck of a job but has done the trick!

Hi Joanne,
  Know the feeling, two roof panels, one side panel, and one panel out the door.
Spent New Years Eve running around the garden hunting down said panels luckily found three of the panels but door panel is away on it's holidays, hope it sends me a postcard so i can get the flaming thing back. jigsaw should be OK just take your time with it and use a fine toothed blade.
 Do you need anything to get you going again if you do let me know and i will see if i can help.

thanks so much Bob, but like a clever thingy, I'd moved all the weans into the glass g/h before I left for london.  This was to make it easier for bessie mate who was coming round to make sure the heater was running ok.

Only thing was, he thought i'd meant look after the polycarb g/h and totally ignored the glass one !!!  So he'd been heating the lilies and rasps for a week.  He'd also got the heater turned up so high that the wire mesh has burnt right through !  :o

The glass one lost three panels, but cos they were toughened, it was just a matter of clipping the panes back in and the panels that blew out were in the corner behind the mini g/h so all babies were safe. Must remember to get some more wire clips !  Good job it's not been frosty as well as windy.   ;D

At least the weather died down long enough for us to drive back up on the 2nd (4 days delayed due to the weather forecasts) but it's not stopped since we got back.

Today is due for sunny intervals, but all i can hear outside is more wind and more rain.

I take it your sealant wasn't much cop then Bob.   ::)

Back to work on Monday, I just couldn't fact it this week.  We can discuss the damage then.   ;D

You might try putting some masking tape down the line which you wish to cut, mark the tape and saw through it. It works with melamine.

Jigsaw with a fine tooth blade but it must run at a very slow speed or it welds the sheet back together as it cuts

Last gales blew a piece of garden furniture into my greenhouse in my home garden. Fortunatley only broke one piece of glass.

Batton down for next week. According to media - its gonna be worse than 2 weeks ago. :(

an extra 100 wire clips when on the glass g/h yesterday and not before time then.

back of plassie g/h was stuck together yesterday with some uv tape and bubble wrap.   ;D  Now just the front to do.

The only panels I lost were the polycarbonate ones.  They were on the vents - principal being that they were lighter for the auto openers to lift.  Neighbour found one shard of it embedded 3" in her lawn!!  So until I can convince OH that I need a bigger, newer one with safety glass think I'll redo the vents with horti glass.

I cut thick plastic with fast circular bench saw. The wind  from the blade keeps it cool. But you end up looking like you have been in a snow storm!

Greenhouses still ok here. I tied the auto openers shut with string in case they lifted.

Allotment stuff was everywhere it shouldn`t be >:(

I noticed someone at an allotment down the road had put up a brand new shed last week. Yesterday it was on its side with the roof off and the contents spilling out. Felt very sorry for him.
