Ailments and alcohol cures
« on: January 06, 2007, 01:35:26 »
Right now I am living in my own personal echo chamber.  Everything is blocked up: nasal passages, sinuses, Eustachian tubes.  I hear people as from a great distance.  My own voice rebounds around my head as if in a weird vacuum.  You all know the feeling.   :(

In the pub tonight I was persuaded to try "Owbridges" - not the cough mixture, but a potion of Woods Navy Rum and Stones Ginger Wine.  Wow, has that worked on the nasal bit!  The relief was almost instant.  A new one to me, and something to add to the drinks/medicine cabinet.   ;)

So what other cures can we share?  I am a lifelong believer in port and brandy for stomach cramps and other gut disorders, with or without diarrhoea.  My mum always prescribed this, and as long as you can keep it down, it works magic.  (Tastes good, too!)   ;D

My father used port and brandy for digestive ailments too. He also believed in the medicinal proprties of gin, though I can't at the moment remember it's exact curative properties. Then there was rum and aniseed for something else.
A whole medicine cabinet of alchoholic cures. Must beat the NHS anyday :D.

When I used to do a bit of singing in a band I was suffering from a husky voice one night. A member of the audience suggested I have a glass of port and it worked. He was in an operatic society and told me all the singers use it to free up the vocal chords.

Red wine for a healthy heart

Beer for a flush out

stout and sprouts for the other flush out, ( also good for xmas party tricks in conjunction with a box of matches)

Gin and tonic   Malaria

malt whiskey    makes you generous  (have one for yourself barman)

A bottle of white cider is good for insomnia especially on park benches.

You can see from my list I do not waste money on perscriptions. In fact I am very healthy apart from a touch of gout which I have been informed  on this forum can be cured with water :o  But I need a second opinion on that one.

Oh nearly forgot  4 brandy and sodas plus a toblerone can work miracles ;D

I have been suffering with a cold and cough since Boxing Day. The cough was giving me disturbed nights. On Tuesday I attended my friends funeral. I was paranoid about coughing in Church. Alishka came to my rescue, she told me to get some PHOLCODINE pastilles. I stopped at the chemist on the way to the Church and started sucking a pastille straight away. Result? I didn't cough once in Church and each night the cough has woken me I just sucked another pastille, soon back to sleep. Highly recommended, thanks Lish.

My Dad used to get recurring bouts of malaria, he swore by his own version of a hot toddy.
Take a large tot of dark rum, add lemon juice, brown sugar, two disprin, and lots of boiling water. Drink it as hot as you can. Then go to bed and sweat it out.
He always woke up right as  ;)rain.

Lorna,
You didn't share the porch with your friend by any chance?
'Say, do you still think about sex'?
'Course I do'!
'What do you do about it'?
'I suck on a life saver'

'Tell me, who drives you down to the beach'?
