Norton Anti Virus has expired on my PC - and dont want to pay for it...

So what totally free software do people recomend ?

my AVG is telling me that it will stop being free after the middle of Jan 2007.

What I used to do with Norton AV was to format the hard drive and start everything from scratch to get another free year. Worked for about 4-5 years.

Are you sure it is not telling you to update to the new version.  they are stopping support for the old version in January - I was warned aboput this by it about a month ago and directed to the new version.  As far as I am aware, it will still be free - tis a Grisoft policy to only require payment from commercial users - payment from private individuals only required if you want a more singing and dancing version.

The new version 7.5 is still free - 7.1 has run its life span and is being dropped in Jan.

7.5 will not work on win95, 98 98SE and ME unless it is the "paid for/corporate" version

this is in a round about way been caused by M$oft dropping support on all pre XP/win2K o/systems

difference - niccer green buttons! - install over current version and you retain your settingss

I am a big fan of AVG and we all use it at home on our pc's (my server, wifes laptop and daughter laptop). Can't recommend it enough.
If people want to try another FREE program I have heard good things about ClamAV

I hold my hands up though and say I have never used it myself. Never had a problem with AVG and as the old saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

NTL netguard security. But think its only free to NTL customers. Everyone else may have to pay but not sure. Also use Adaware

You're quite right, AVG 7.5 is still free.  Much less hassle than bloated Norton AV

Having had Adware in the olden days, then Panda (now expired), I blindly followed a family rec & got (the free) Avast.

had avast didnt like it very much so downloaded avg again much better. 8)

Have used AVG for years with complete confidence.

Upgraded to 7.5 with no probs at all.

I think the firewall option/add on is only a 30 day trial but because we connect through a router I didn't download that bit.  As I said, I think.
