No potatoes
« on: April 23, 2004, 12:39:22 »
Planted some spuds 4 weeks ago - no sign of them - should I dig and have a look, or should I be a bit more patient?

Thanks

umm, I would say be a bit more patient.  Did you bury them super deep?  My earlies have been in for about 5 maybe 6 weeks (haven't got my diary up here to check) and some of my earlies were up and looking lovely today.

Tis funny, they are quite well camouflaged, some of mine were very obvious and nice and big and bushy, others I didn't notice at first, wasn't until I really looked that I spotted them.

I think earlies take about 10 weeks + to form proper tubers?

My 1st earlies planted on 6 March, 4" or so deep surfaced just the other day.

Poking around will more than likely break off the sprouts

I concur. I planted mine about a month ago + quite deep because i use a no dig method. They are only now just appearing.

I was worried for a time though.

I planted my first earlies on Valentines Day... other allotment holders planted a whole month later... mine appeared 2 days earlier than theirs!!
Mine like theirs obviously laid in the ground waiting for the right conditions.
As you say Joolieeee "patience".
You can't rush nature!

Steve
