.....and the Weedin forecast for 2007 is:

Winter - cold-ish and dark-ish
Spring - wet-ish and windy-ish
Summer - warm-ish and dry-ish
Autumn - cooling down-ish and mellow fruitfulness-ish

And that is about as accurate as you can get. ;D

After last winter and spring we need a more 'normal' (as in climate geting warmer normal). The trend until last winter was for milder winters wint ocasional cold snaps. I am hoping last winter was just a 'blip' in this trend. I certainly couldnt hack another winter like last, so cold for so long, with little usefull rain.

I agree they cant know that far in advance, and you cant believe some of the stuff some newspapers come out with. I wonder where they got their info from.? I am willing to bet its from the oh so accurate metcheck people. They were a bit off the mark about last winter, it was cold but nowhere near as bad as they predicted. Even if its part true, a prediction of -14c is far too generalised for th whole country. It does not allow for local climates. Yes some places it might get to -14c but other places will be colder (scottish glens maybe) and others will be not so cold. For instance in my area the absolute coldest it gets is -8c, and that only rarely. Generaly no lower than about -5c in the real cold spells. So I wouldnt start panicing yet!

Weather is unpredictable but I admit trends and patterns are noticable. For instance last November we had an unusual cold snap (this week to be exact). We then had an unusualy cold winter. In past few years the first real cold snap did not arrive until Christmas, and the winters were generaly mild ones. This year this week in november is set to be wet and windy but quite mild. We have had frosts but quite moderate 'autumn' frosts not sharp 'winter' ones. Does this mean that the winter will be mild? Who knows for sure, but I think it will be different to last year. Hopefully it will be short and sharp followed by an early spring!

According to my greenhouse thermometer, it got up to 14.9c her in dorset today. Rather mild for the time of year!

I don't think you can tell what the winter's going to be like from autumn weather though. We had a mild autumn in 1962, it stayed mild till March, then it turned arctic. I'll never forget going to the local park with my father and younger sister, in long trousers, and being ridiculed by my father because I couldn't handle knee-deep snow wearing shorts.

the records seem to pedict a trend, very hot summers are followed by hard winters, look at 1976 for instance, just my 2 penniths...

When Julie Reinger forecasts -14 I'll believe it might happen.

The only time I've experienced -14 was on a journey from Kinloss to Hardwick (540 miles in 12hrs 40 mins) between Aviemore and Pitlochry.

Theres another bit to that saying isnt there toadspawn. I cant remember what it is. Something about a wet/mild november leading to a cold dry winter? Care to fill us in?

Cambourne7: I dont envy you those temperatures one bit! Brr! Although thats nothing compared to something i heard about on the radio last night. Some kind of new 'therapy' that involves exposing the body to seriously low temperatures. How does -50c and lower strike you? Called 'cryotherapy'. I didnt think the human body could withstand such temperatures. Ouch!

I don't like the sound of cryotherapy one little bit. A small dose won't kill you, but really cold temperatures hurt, they really do.
