Halloweens harvest from the plot - no pumpkins!
« on: October 31, 2006, 18:59:12 »

My looooooooong leeks - thanks to Supersprout for the mulching idea - these were mulched with wetted shredded paper so they are spanking clean and long and white!

This is it!  The last of the tomatos from the allotment - a mixed bag of cherries, beefsteaks and whites.  I still have a big triffid like plant in the greenhouse for a later harvest.

Four squashes - 3 courgettes and 1 lemon cucumber.

Black and white moolis to shred into stir fry.

And these 2 carriers full of pears are a mix of commice and conference which old Jack and I gathered from the farm that borders our allotment.  They only keep fancy sheep and horses and have a huge lake surrounded by a pear orchard.  They spoke to Jack and told him that they had taken all the pears they wanted now for the year so we were welcome to the rest.  We gathered 6 carriers full, I came home with 2 and there are still masses of pears there.  I have 4 kilner jars left which I will fill with pears to bottle to give away at Christmas.......other than that, pears with every meal!

good timing if we get a whisker of frost this week as predicted ::)
Speaking of passing on ideas EJ, I ordered an office shredder today (stuff the security, more mulch!) and will be growing White Beauty toms next year on your recommendation - what comes around sure goes around ;D

It is Shirley, a winter radish.  They are great shredded into stirfries and noodles or coleslaws.  Very peppery.  I believe you sow them after the longest day.  Anyhow, these went in during September and already they are huge - like summer radish, they are very very fast growing.
