Tomato question
« on: September 26, 2006, 20:13:01 »
I have never been in this situation before, I still have loads of tomatoes on my plants which are outdoors.  Yesterday and today there have been none ripe or ripening, should I pick them all now and bring them inside to ripen, and make chutney.  I am wondering if the colder and longer nights have stopped them ripening even though we have had glorious days.   I am grateful for any advice.  Thanks, T.

Hi Tulippa.  This is not something I have a problem with here in the South but I've read that the following help:

1.  Put banana skins underneath the plants.
2.  Cover the plants with enviromesh.
3.  Snap the stems and lie them on the soil.
4.  Cut the stems and hang them in a warm dry place.
5.  Pick the fruits and put them in a drawer with either a ripe tomato or a banana.

Take your pick!   :)

If you're expecting frost pick 'em
If you're not expecting frost don't pick 'em yet

Thanks both of you, I will leave them then.  It was just a suprise after picking so many each day to have none ready.  I am in the south so not expecting a frost just yet, but will have to go out and buy some which won't be any match for these. :(
