All quiet on the bird front?
« on: September 25, 2006, 14:46:48 »
Now is it just me and my garden, or has anyone else found that many of their garden birds have disapeared from the garden recently? A few weeks ago there were loads of them in the garden, primarily sparrows, and we were going through food like no tomorow. But now all had gone quiet, the food is hardly touched, and few birds are seen.

Has anyone else expereinced this. Do you find appearances of garden birds go in phases, lots of one species one minute, then nothing for ages. Is it just the time of year or could there be something wrong?

Our garden is quiet too, but with all the berries around I imagine the birds are finding plenty to eat elsewhere at the moment.

birds moult after the breeding season is over, they look a bit rough after looking after at least three broods of hungry kids.

blackbirds haven't been seen in my garden for over a month, before that you were falling over them.

at the lottie they are hiding in the undergrowth, and then now its almost? autumn
there is plenty of food in the hedgerows to enjoy.

don't worry they will be back/shades x

So its quiet everywhere  ??? ???   ???ut its the same every year.  The Birds are on their holidays.   they are enjoying the fruits of autumn and scuttling about under the bushes.  Robins are in full song so they are to the fore and the Hawks are still going around.   I had the first visit from Mr Heron this morning so autumn is here.  The Geese are over from Russia now but I havent spotted them yet.  Soon i shall see them flying over, skein after skein of them - again, Autumn is here.   ;D ;D ;D

Blackies are sitting high in the trees gorging on berries & looking a bit stupified.

Now if only those tree branches were stronger  ::)

We've still got our resident pair of Blue Tits in the garden.  They've been coming down every day since fledgling times.  I think they will nest with us next spring.  We also have a Great Tit who comes quite a few times each day.  A few Starlings and some Sparrows.  Can also hear a Chaffinch in the tree but have yet to spot him on the table or the feeders, the crafty little so and so!

Glad to read that it's normal. I was beginning to think that, since our dog died recently, the local cats might have moved in and scared the birds away.

Been hearing lots of different bird calls lately but apart form the robin have not seen any of the callers. Dear robbie was quite freindly today. Sat for ages on a fence post 'chatting' to me, whilst I was out in the garden. Handsome fellow he was too.

I do so hope the chaffinches return to the garden this autumn and winter. They were a regular and welcome sight all last winter but when spring came they all disapeared. Hopefully one of the mystery calls i have been hearing is that of a 'chaffie'.

This normally a quiet time of year. Most birds are in moult and getting ready for the winter. They try and keep quiet and unobtrusive as they are their most vulnerable during this period, They'll be back in a few weeks, you see.
I'd rather be flying

It is very quiet as has been said last week and week before.  I have been looking forward to seeing the geese flying over, morning and evening but even they are absent.  They should be here and I expect they are but will have to go and look at their usual roosting place away up on the moors.  Bill Oddie and Kate were watching the 'Pinkys' come in.  I have seen a small group of them about 40 but nothing like the numbers I saw only 10 yrs back.   :'( :'(
