Hi

I find it odd but some hostas in my garden have actualy flowered!

Q1 - How long will they flower for before i can obtain a seed head?

Q2 - When i get a seed head how do i grow more hosts?

Ours always flower but if they set seed we never save it, any self sets probably get hoovered up by the slugs before we see them!

Mine always flower, but I've never had self-setters either. I don't have much trouble with slugs, so I'm thinking more about poor germination. On the other hand, the one time I do have slug trouble is with seedlings so you could be right. I've just had the new Plants of Distinction catalogue (their catalogue should be coming online next Tuesday, incidentally), and they do a seed mix. I'm tempted.

Growing hostas from seed might be quite a fun experiment, never tried that. Only ever divide them to get new plants :)

You don't get new varieties that way. I'll probably give it a try.

my hostas are in a bed of gravel so no slugs :-)

The hostas ( 3 of them now ) have all opened with very sweet double flowers.

Any idea how long the flowers will last and if its normal for them to be flowering now?

Hi, it's very late for them to flower. About mid summer is more usual. Mine have all just about died back to ground level now.

It's very late indeed, but it's been an odd year. A lot of mine died right back in the summer, and some haven't begun to regrow. Normally they're OK whether they're in sun or shade, but if it's going to keep happening I'm going to have to move some of them; the key things this year have been shade and ground cover to shade the soil at least.

i am not sure if i should cut the stem to but the growth back into the roots.

There were only planted in May....

May as well cut the stem if you want to be tidy now ::) - it dries up and dies down naturally anyway. Mine were over ages ago - lucky you, eh?

Mine too! Interestingly enough 'though, have found that they seem to thrive in a hot bed (not of my planting) just as well as in shade! :P

nah i doubt it's unusual considering the weather we've had this year. i went past atleast 2 houses today with sunflowers in full bloom.

Boots, a lady I work for has hers in tubs in full sun. Most are still going on..and on...and on..

So don't think they're so fussy?

Stange you would say that but some sunflower seeds that had fallen out of a head a while ago have not grown into flowers themselves - odd

Front garden will be attacked next sunday so will leave the hosta then.

I find Hostas flourish in full sun provided they have water. This year was a bit of a disaster for them; the ones in the sun died right back, while the ones that got some shade came through better. Some weren't affected at all.

My clematis has flowered twice this year. The other day when I was clipping the plants around the pool I actually saw two toads together. As for the hosta's. In other countries they sell the hosta flowers for display. I have brought them into the house, but as with all flowers they don't last very long. Lots of plants and wildlife are so confused by this weather. Even me.lol

flowers are still going strong its 3 weeks now.

my front garden gets full sun for about 2 hours but this does not seam to have affected them...
