blown down - what now?
« on: September 04, 2006, 11:48:52 »
The fierce winds have taken their toll on my lovely England team of sunflowers, some over 12' high.  Found one with it's head in the pond, must have given the goldfish a bit of a scare!

Rescued 3 but the rest are consigned to the compost - eventually.  However, I'd like to know what I can do with the heads?  They're past their best but it seems a shame to put them in the bin.  I don't want to grow giants next year but I'm wondering if I can make some use of them, please advise?

The birds will get the seeds out themselves ;)
But with the head i am going to use for my seeds next year i have hung it up and i presume the seeds will fall out when they are ready :)

They rub out with the finger after a couple of weeks drying... any longer and you end up with them all over the floor.

I grew "big smile" which grows between 12 and 15 inches.  They flowered early, but I have a number of heads for feeding the birds.

Lost my pampered sunflower in the gale as well.  I was really quite upset,  I know, i know am silly!!!  It was 13ft 6".  I fully intend feeding it to the birds in time.   ;) ;)
