mind you- i speak as a person who sowed rocket and got unidentified tomatoes *sigh*i think it was dtbrowns fault tho.....
but i still watched for the rocket to get to edible size for a good 6 weeks afore i realised..

they are trying to shoot to seed.
tbh, the varieties i grow stand for quite some time - and while they start growing lengthways they dont get bitter or anything, so i just have them when i can, seems fine.

A bit harsh there Roy. This is called "Allotments for All", not "Allotments for Beginners". If you don't like someone's threads, don't read them.

One of the great things about this site is the relaxed, generally un-moderated feel. I think most people here are very much themselves, which isn't the case in a lot of other forums. I don't think it's particularly helpful to tell people what or what not to post, unless it's intentionally offensive or abusive and it's hard to take offense at a piccie of a lettuce, even if the lettuce is going to seed.

oh! I'm growing Pandero for the first time this year (red little gem) and they look nowt like that - mind you they are tiny. Your leaves still look edible, though a nuisance to take off ...? I might be tempted to mulch me outdoor toms with them ;)

My allotment neighbour continually tells me that there are very few gardeners who can grow lettuce successfully through July and August. Just to reinforce that point, I have had zero success this year with lettuce, a combination of slugs, drought and bolting.

Red little gem eh? Sounds fabulous ...

Don't feel bad Tim, my lettuces all bolted in a matter of minutes, it seemed. And then I also had a juvenile fox "watering" them! ;D I'm not sure what the secret to successful lettuce in July/August is but if anyone knows, please share!

my little gems, bronze arrowhead and pak-choi all bolted, still the positive side is that I should be able to harvest some seeds and the ducks are loving them! ;D ;D

Correction.
I do NOT just speak my mind. I try to establish the full detail of a problem & then, with research where necessary, give the best answer that I can.

My aims are:
First - to offer ideas for those with problems.
Second - to seek help on my problems from the world of wisdom out there.
Third - to have a chuckle along the way.

'Still eat the leaves'?? Where's the 'heart' in that!!
