Hi Lorna.  I'll let SS answer for herself but I find it's worth growing flowers, particularly herbs, near runner beans because they attract pollinating insects. French beans on the otherhand don't need to be pollinated by insects.

Hmm I wonder if that was why I had duff pollination this year? My runner bed is right by a mass of sage which buzzes like mad most years. This year I rejuvenated it by cutting the whole lot back to stumps. Worked a treat on the sage, but runners have been dreadful (as has everyone's) and it might have been so much better if the sage had been big enough to flower.

Hey ho. Next year my sage hedge will be mental, given that it's now too large to jump over!
