Sweet pea pods
« on: July 14, 2006, 11:26:38 »
Not much of a flower grower - usuually veg. This year my daughters have grown a number of sweet peas some of which have started to form pods. What do I do with these? Are they worth saving for seeds? should they be removed?

i think i am right in saying that you need t remove the pods regularly in order to keep the flowers coming and if you dont remove them they will stop flowering. i think thats right.

Even better, cut the flowers before pods set and ongoing flowering is much better.

You can save seed but it is a bit of a lottery as to what they will grow into next year colour wise. But that can be all part of the fun!

Don't forget, sweet pea seeds are poisonous I believe.

Sweet peas and dahlias are - the more you pick the more flowers you get. Ideally, cut off the flowers, before they form seedpods with the sweet peas, and if there are any that are not particularly good flowers, just cut them off.

When you've picked a bunch, put them in a vase in the house, the smell is fantastic!!

Mine have gone from being covered in flowers to being covered in pods in the last couple of days, despite picking. Hope that's not the end of them :'(

Shouldn't be.  Just cut off all the pods, and you should be OK.

my hanging/trailing ones have been far worse for poddng than my giant ones and have noticeably far fewer blooms.

you think you've got them all and then as if by magic there's tonnes more !

The giant ones which have taken over the runner bean trellis are producing blooms quicker than i can cut them.  I've been supplying the office as well as the house for about 3 weeks now and no sign of slowing down .... thankfully.
