Chameleon food !
« on: July 08, 2006, 05:03:27 »
OK experts !  I need your help.  I've just arranged to pick up some pots from a girl who has a chameleon and in exchange she wants some non-toxic veg !

what do you reckon ?  broadie leaves ?  cabbage leaves ?

what's toxic to a chameleon ?   ::)  any advice ?  I don't want to be responsible for the demise of her favourite lizard !

Cheers !!!

Hi mrsKP

Quote
Chameleons generally eat locusts, mantids, crickets, and other insects, but larger chameleons have been known to eat small birds. However, contrary to popular belief, most full grown chameleons tend not to eat flies. A few species, such as Chamaeleo calyptratus have been known to consume small amounts of plant matter. Chameleons prefer running water to still water.

I was lucky enough to be able to spend time watching a chameleon this week they are fascinating.

They don`t seem to eat much veg at all so a regular supply of small amounts of fresh young leaves may be the way to go or maybe plant up a pot of cress or cat grass and pop it into the tank in a week or two and let it browse if it wants to. Apparently feeding it snails off your plot isn`t recommended as they carry parasites.

Wow, that must count as one of the most unusual questions I've ever seen on here :D
Just had to google out of burning curiosity and got these:

ha ha!  i got the same two sites when i googled !  somewhere it said not cabbage, lettuce and erm .. something else (which i can't find again now)  ???.

carrots were mentioned, so i think i'll do some thinning tomorrow morning and give her a bunch of those !

i must admit, i was taken a bit by surprised when i happily asked her if she wanted anything in exchange for her pots.  i was thinking more like one of the spare chilli or aubergines plants i've got in abundance !!!

thanks for the help though.

I wouldn't know either if I tripped over one tbh.  I saw "Clive" today though and while I'm sure his owner thinks he's beautiful, I don't think I'm a lizard kinda gal.

I don't think he eats much vegetation, just an odd bit here and there.  He was living in a open front cage thing in amonst a load of plants which looked intact.  I gave him some carrot tops and greenery, organic of course, so I hope I don't get an email from her in a week saying he carked it !

he did look a bit like this and was in the middle of shedding on his forehead which makes him grumpy !!  I didn't like to ask if "grumpy" meant that he was going to take my arm off so i didn't get too close !

i suppose he was about as my hand (6"?) from nose to the the bit of his tail i could see.
