Topic: thinking of winter

Hi everyone,  ;D
 
As a complete novice whats best to grow in the greenhouse over the winter months? should i be thinking of heating?
growing toms and cus and they are going great, not bad for a greenhouse virgin. ;)

You can grow carrots in the border.

Hi jodie, I'm a greenhouse virgin this year too!
Big plans for the winter greenhouse, including:

Carrots like MikeB says
Lettuce-y salad-ey things, mizuna, corn salad (probably more if I look carefully)
Spinach and mustard greens
Possibly broadies to get some early in the year ::)

If we liked them, radishes (but we don't)

Can't wait (only kidding - but really looking forward to the challenge of a four-season harvest :o)

thanks for that guys,
 i've had problems with my lettuce  in the greenhouse so far. they grow up rather than out! Is it just to hot during the summer?

probably - they might do better outdoors after a short start in plugs in the g'house?

lettuce grows even in the middle of winter - not bad for a thing that can go so limp, eh?
have it in unheated g/h in the winter - shelter from the wind is all it needs to not become tough - but outdoors and in semi-shade in the summer. growing up means making a flower and seeds - it's one little stressed bunny (or plant, whichever)

jodiek,  SOD WINTER!!!!  Do you think we could have a bit of summer first PLEASE!!!

I know gardeners like to plan ahead, but at this time of year can we enjoy what produce (glut) we have?

Start thinking about winter in September (at the earliest) PLEEESE!
