Hi Doris,

I had a word with my husband about 'skype' when he came home from work and he says that he wouldn't touch it!
Anything that interferes with firewalls in any way is best avoded.
They could use the access they gain to introduce all kinds of rubbish onto your 'puter.
He also says that, in this world, you don't get 'owt for nowt' and free telephone calls anywhere around the world is highly sus.

The final decision is, of course, yours but hope this info helps.

Cheers Eileen.

In any case, it will only allow you to communicate with other people who are also using the same programme

Thanks Eileen for that! I must admit I stupidly hadn't thought about the firewall aspect! Duh me  :) Will have to think long and hard.
Thanks to you to Huch, have a few friends on it, who "claim" it is fast becomming the new msn Messenger, so was wondering what everyone else thought ;D  DP

Good advice - skype is from the same stable as kazaa; and if not yet, will probably soon become a virus and spyware hot bed.  Not to be touched with a ten foot bargepole.

All best - Gavin

Oooops, sorry - all IMHO!  But I tell you my opinion is far from b....y humble tonight - phone line went down on tuesday afternoon, and I've had 487 e-mails in the time it took BT to repair the thing.  14 were genuine - the rest spam and virus-laden gunk.

Junk mail really is becoming a real bug. It costs me lots of time everyday to filter through it, god knows how much it's costing companies world-wide.

..hmmm, yes....flippin emails....I get around 90 a day to my personal addresses and every now and then one of them is relevant........

...and no, I don't want my pen!s 3 inches longer.....

...and no I don't want viagra or one of the "new" variants.....

...and I don't need another mortgage......or a loan...

Bill Gates has said over the last year or so that he (Microsoft) is working towards eliminating spam emails...

..and he recently suggested perhaps a 1p charge for emails....which wouldn't hurt the "normal" user..but would cost spammers due to the hundreds of thousands of emails they send out.....

..I am yet to be convinced....
....we are all visitors to this earth........enjoy your stay.....:)

I heard of another suggestion, whereby for each email you send, your computer's processor would have to perform a complex calculation. If you're sending one or two emails, you're not really going to notice any speed difference. But for a spammer's machine sending thousands, that would tie their PC up for ages.

There is one real cause of spam..believe it or not, people do visit the advertised websites and spend money.

Thanks for the advice, Skype is not going anywhere near my computer! :o
Spam drive me nuts, I derive great pleasure in bouncing them back! (evil laugh!!)  I seem to spend more time running virus checks, bouncing mail, checking this that and the other, than I do using the computer for my stuff! Kinda takes some of the fun out of it  :( DP

gavin, that's a lot of spam. the spammers use tools to harvest email addresses from websites, so perhaps you could remove your email address from your own website, and replace it with the code generated by this:

Fortunately, Ava, we don't get that many, but we were gettiing those you mention, & many 'invitations'.

Again, fortunately, StopZilla knocked them on the head from day one. = Tim

Thanks for that link, Ross - it looks good.  More sophisticated than the others I've seen (and tried!).

Sadly, I was far too late spotting the harvesting trick and my e-mail address was harvested from Yahoo (I think) and my websites ---- and is now being sold many times over!  At least I suspect so, judging from the amount of virus stuff "spoofing" my e-mail addy.

What I really should do is change my e-mail address - but that would be such a faff!  Especially when it's so quick and easy to delete the stuff without ever downloading it.

Grin and bear it - and stoke up the fires of hell for the anti-social b......s!

All best - Gavin
