GW Sunflower Trial
« on: March 20, 2004, 16:06:04 »
Anyone else having a go at the GW Sunflower Trial. I have applied for the Infrared F1 which should grow to 6ft.  Hope I am lucky enough to receive free seeds.  If not will have to look in the nurseries.
Happy gardening all...........Pat

Hiya Pat

Not sure what the great sunflower trial is, as fell asleep last night trying to watch Gardeners World!?

Have bought loads of different sunflower seeds to plant again this year on lottie, and grew a row of 8ft giant sunflowers last year which turned out ab fab! Couldn't believe how strong the stems were, as tough as telegraph poles?

Markymark - it's Gardeners World sunflower trial.  They did a trial of sweet peas last year.  It is just to test out different species of sunflowers.  You can apply for a free packet of seed by going to the BBC Gardening site and selecting Gardeners World if you want to join in.

Looks like we have 2 threads on the same topic. Is this another competition? Can I join?

No Ken, this is a completely different thread to the other one. That is strictly for A4A and this one is a Gardeners World trial (see my reply to Markymark :D :)

Did the GW trial seeds come by special delivery?

Mr Postie tried to deliver something by special delivery yesterday, but as no one was in, I have to go and pick it up from the post office (which I won't be able to do until next week). I was just wondering/hoping if it was that!
gone to pot :D

Watching GW this evening got me wondering how those of you who were lucky enough to receive seeds for the trial got on with them - anyone manage to grow one as tall as the GW winner :D  I don't recall any of the varieties being mentioned in our own Sunflower competition.

I watched a little bit of GW tonight but not being an admirer of Monty Don watched only a tad of the sunflower slot and thought it was skimped. ::)
Having said that I bought a packet of sunflower seeds on impulse way back thinking the Grandkids would like to give it a go, but play stations prevailed, ::) so I threw a few seeds in pots and ground (not that I have much) and one in a pot grew to about 9 feet but no flower as yet.
My question is …Will it flower at this late stage?

Roy. ;D

You still have time for it to flower, Roy but I doubt it will have time to set seed. Mind you, this freakish weather might be kind to you. The winner in the GW compo put my 4 metre effort well into the shade. Ah, well, there's always next year.
