Howden pumpkin
« on: June 27, 2006, 22:05:21 »
I am growing my first ever pumpkin and am amazed that it has fruit on it already.  What I do find peculiar is that the fruit which is about 8 or 9 ins long is oblong and pale green.  Should it be like this given that Howden pumpkins are round and bright red?

Curious....baby pumpkins tend to be round straight from the off, but then I have never grown this variety so maybe it is different....

What shape are baby Butternuts.   All my squashes got mixed up when the dog knocked the tray off so an early indication would be helpful so I don't pluck a butternut thinking its a courgette - but then again I do have some round courgettes so how do I tell them apart from my pumpkins?

I have the same problem, but instead of a dog my garden pest is my daughter who removed all the labels.  :o

My baby butternuts have always looked like mini butternuts but are green and if I remember correctly a little speckly.

I thought I would post some pics of young courgettes and squashes as it may help those of you who have lost labels.  I have also got one that I cannot identify myself so hope that someone knows what it is.

First one is a pic of the Howden pumpkin that is green and oval.  I am sure it is a pumpkin plant as it is so vigorous.  I am beginning to wonder what this is after your comments.

The next one is Courgette de Nice (ronde).

The third is a green courgette (type not known as received in a swap as zuccini).

The fourth is Jemmer F1 Hybrid courgette (yellow).

The fifth is Yellow pattipan.

The sixth one Yellow crookneck.

The last one I need your help on please as it is not what the label says it is ie not Yellow pattipan.   Could it be Yellow Patisson?

My butternut squashes are not in flower yet so have no fruits but from previous years I remember them being pear shaped and as described by Sweet-pea.

Hmm, can't see the last one on my computer, rats. Baby butternuts look like little butternuts, but green. Cute things! Last year I wound up growing a complete mystery pumpkin (green, kind of rugby ball shaped, with deep ridges), but it tasted delicious! This year I have managed to once again mix up the squashes despite my careful labeling. Only thing I do know is where the courgettes are.
This year it's squash.

Ah, see it now. Whatever it is is, it is not a pattipan. Those squashes do look lovely though, Paulines7.
This year it's squash.

Could it be a veg spag?
My one remaining squash in store looks like that but BIG, and I won't know what it is till it's opened.
Ooh the excitement of mystery squash! 8)

SS, I didn't grow any vegetable squash.

EJ, funny that you should say that as my OH thought they looked a bit like them, but I didn't sow any.

Here is a list of what I did sow.
Jemmer F1 Hybrid (yellow courgette)
Ortolana di Faenza (green courgette)
Courgette de Nice (round)
Unknown zucchini from Lorna (these have green courgettes growing on them so can't be these)
Golden Scallopini
White Patisson
Yellow Pattipan
Butternut
Yellow crookneck
Pattison Orange
Bennings Green Tint Scallop
Mountaineer Winter Squash
Soleil F1 Yellow (courgette)

If it is a gourd, can it be eaten?  How will I know?
