First Early Potatoes
« on: June 08, 2006, 12:50:26 »
Hello,

I recall reading one of Tim's posts saying that First Earlies would flower around the 13th week after planting out. I put two rows of Maris Bard just over 7 weeks ago and yesterday I noticed buds starting to form. Does this mean they will soon be ready for lifting? I would've thought they would need more time to grow...  ???

Thanks,
Vaca

It all depends on variety to be honest, some dont even really flower.

At 9 to 10 weeks I start to rummage around under the soil to see the size of the tubers.

Most first earlies need over twelve weeks....
Patience!

Should I continue earthing up my earlies right up until I dig them out of the ground?

(Mine went in on Easter Sunday, 16 April, so I'm still a few wks away from Saddad's 12-week recommendation.)

Thanks spud friends :)

If they're at this stage,
1. It's not that easy!
2. They're shielded from greening anyway.

If not, & they've been earthed up a couple of times, I would say 'no need'.
