Preventative measure against root fly
« on: May 29, 2006, 22:08:52 »
We had a lot of crops lost last year on our allotments to root fly, so this year I have planted all the cabbage, cauli and sprouts with bottomless yogart pots round them.  Put the plants in as normal, cut the bottom out of a yogart pot or something similar and thread it over the plant, screwing it down into the ground an inch or so, this also supports the plant against the winds. Up until now I have not lost a plant this year, will probable go up tomorrow and find the rabbits have eaten them all  :D
I read about this last year but can't remember where , anything is worth a try to stop this pest.
Just one more polytunnel, just one more chicken coop.
Just one more allotment.

You can use roofing felt or anything that you can make a disc around the base of the plant. I used lino but the foxes had a game with them and the slugs went in underneath so I took them off. Will be putting them back on shortly.
