Cabbage root fly

Went up my allotment yeaterday and all my cauliflower and cabbage were wilted  :'(   Pulled one up and all the root (what was left of it) was covered by small maggots.   Can any of my plants be saved?  ???   And what other plants will be affected by them. I have beetroot and turnips growing either side, will these be eaten as well?   What's the best way to stop the maggots appearing and is there a way of getting rid of them when they do.

mine wilted last year, i was advised to put a capful of jeyes fluid in a full wateing can and water once around the roots. worked a treat. they wee standing tall and looking great within two days.

As that's not organic, you could try soaking some rhubarb leaves in water overnight and then giving the roots a good dousing with that and see if that works.

I'll give it a try, I pulled a turnip this morning and that had maggots as well  :(

Will go and scrounge some rhubarb leaves!!! If I can't get any will try the jeyes fluid!!   How come rhubarb leaves work?

They contain oxalic acid which is poisonous - it also deters things that eat veg.

Before I get the  answer that  Jeyes is not now allowed to be used on gardens I know ..Because the all seeing all knowing EEC said so..
But it  does (DID) work on cabbage root fly as Weedbusta says .
Also a teaspoon full to a two gallon watering can used to  water newly sown brassicas in   used to keep root fly away too ... .Cheers Jim

Some of my Spring Cabbages are wilting, could this be due to Cabbage Root Fly.  One of the roots was completely eaten by something.  If it is, is it safe to use Jeyes Fluid on them?

Those little cabbage root fly mats are a little B-word! Several had blown off last year. Perhaps something more substantial needed?

So far I have not been blessed with the fly.. lots of other nasties will quite happily chomp through the roots even some aphids although they prefer lettuce!
 :(

underlay - cut into squares about 4 inches square, then cut a y-shape into the middle with a long leg (if you see what I mean) will last several seasons ::)
