[most of you have seen this - I'm just editing out a couple of historical anomalies!]
Jargon-busters and c..p-cutters - please let me know how this should be improved.
It is unfair on my part - I've unashamedly copied, pasted and edited from lots of other people's efforts. The good ideas are theirs (Ina, Tim, Palustris, and others I'm sure) - the mistakes are mine!
All best - Gavin
How to post Photographs and Images?1 For photos and images inside a posting. For grandmothers - the harder the eggs you can suck, the further down this section you look!
1.1 Is your photo/image
uploaded on to the Internet?
1.1.1 Add your photo to your website and upload.
1.1.2 Lost you? Bad start - sorry! Try one of the photo-sharing sites on the internet; there are several options - have a look at recent "how to" postings for the current favourites. You'll need to follow the instructions and register as a new user on whichever site you choose, and then follow their instructions to upload your photos from your computer to their site.
1.2 Get the
URL of your photo?
Either the URL has to be typed absolutely correctly at 1.3.
OR
It's easier to avoid mistakes by copying the URL. In Internet Explorer, right-click the photo/image, and select properties. A box will open, with (about half-way down) the address/URL - shade the whole address, from "http://.." to "...jpg". Right click and select Copy.
You can now use Right-Click and Paste to insert the URL in 1.3.
1.3 Go to your posting - next to the letter P on your keyboard is a square bracket like so[ Then type img] , type/paste the URL of your photo, then type [/img]. Now click Preview to see if it's worked.
1.4 Problems? - your picture still doesn't show? A few suggestions
- Check the web-page hosting your picture - does it appear there?
- Check that the address/URL is absolutely correct - if you've typed it, try copying it!
- Have you used "square bracket"img"square bracket" before the address/URL, and "square bracket"/img"square bracket" after the address/URL?
1.5 Want to put in more than one photo?; if you've managed one, the rest are a lot easier. Follow the above, so that you have
picture 1 address
picture 2 address
picture 3 address
etc (Remember - type the [ square brackets ], not the ones shown here).
2 Or are you looking for an
image linked to you as a contributor - an
avatar which always appears under your name.
Step 1 - click on your
Profile button. A page will open, and half-way down you'll see Personalised Picture. You have two options -
2.1 Choose one from the list offered?
2.2 Or click the tick box beside "I have my own pic", and enter the URL/address of your chosen image at "http:// " (see 1.2 above for accurately copying the address!) - this could be on your own web-site, or A N Other.
2.3 What sort of picture?
First the curmudgeonly bit - please remember that some A4A users have much older and slower computers? The smaller and faster the image, the less frustrating their experience!
Size -
100 x 100 px (better still 80 x 80 px)
Larger files are automatically resized - but remember us with rubber band power!
Format -
You can use a static ".gif" (small file, neat and quick)
or an animated ".gif" (bigger, fancier, and slower)
or a ".jpg" file (good for avatars which are photos)
Bamboozled? Go on, don't panic, just use the image/animation you've found, and trust the board software to sort it for you - trying to sort the graphic options goes just a bit beyond the scope of this FAQ!
The whole process is a bit fiddly, so feel free to ask for advice on the board. Somebody will have the information or wherewithal to help out!
