?maggots in soil eating my plants
« on: May 21, 2006, 08:03:01 »
Hi there, I have been reading the boards for a while, lot's of great information on here :)  Wondered if I could have some help with a problem in our garde We built some raised beds for my veggies earlier on this year as the soil is very heavy and clay like where we live.  Both in our garden and in my raised bed everywhere we dig there are maggots.  I have never seen so many! We do live on a farm, don't know if that would make things worse...
We have tried removing them by hand but there are just too many.  I think they may be leatherjackets, they definitely have no legs.  They were on our patio too hiding under the pots, tons of them.  They are destroying my vegetables and seedings now i think. We found one hanging off a half eaten radish yesterday and one has even bitten my son! I have put the harmless slug killer down and part netted some of my plot, but damage is continuing, and it doesn't look like typical slug/snail damage. I can upload a picture probably, but they are a grey colour and headless Yuk!

Hi there,

Are the "maggots" fat or thin, and would it be possible to get a photo?

A pic would help. Do they have brown heads? Have your patio plants had the leaves notched? Sound suspiciously like a bad case of Vine Weevil to me!

Have you used spent mushroom compost?? I have and i'm experiencing the same problem, but on a much smaller scale!
If it is vine weevil, what is the course of action??

these ARE vine weevil grubs

Good luck
Kevb

P.S. now i've posted the pic! i've decided that they're not the ones i have LOL

There is a nematode that you can buy and water in, best done in Sept. but if you have lots of them in the maggot stage it would work well. The nematode is microscopic but gets into the Maggot which gets eaten from the inside!

If they are associated with mushroom compost are they the grubs of those little black flies that live in composts..... spent Mushroom compost can be heavily infected.

Thanks for all the replies  :)
I think they are Leatherjackets - they look just like the grub by the onions!
We must have a heavy infestation - is there anything other than the nematodes to control them please? Or am I going to have to pay the kids to dig around!!
