Dierama pulcherrimum
« on: May 12, 2006, 22:39:51 »
I've got a Dierama problem. I live in Berlin and I bought a Dierama bulb from Ebay UK, it arrived intact after 7 days in the post. I planted the healthy looking bulb in the earth and then a green tip appeared, but dried up and fell off after 1 day, although I  had watered the bulb daily.

What can I do? Do you think that I should buy seeds? Last winter it was -18 and I don't have a frost free greenhouse. Should I forget the Dierama and find another, more suitable plant?

Thanks

I grew mine from seed. They took a couple of years before flowering but well worth the wait.

Why not give the seed a try and see what happens.

Hallo Maria, Dierama bulbs need protection in winter. Minus 8 or minus 10 can kill the bulb, The fleshy roots need protection. If planted in well drained sandy soil and protected against the cold, south faced, they can survive the winter. It takes about 3 years to flower. But I should start growing from seed and keep one eye open at the bulb as well.  They are beautiful he when they are  in flower????
