Greenhouse Shading?
« on: May 10, 2006, 17:05:40 »
???

What are the pros and cons? Netting stuff outside (how do you attach that?) or the "paint it on, white stuff"

Never had a greenhouse before, so all opinions welcome!!

I now copy Doris Pinks and invested in a couple of cheap as chips bamboo blinds which I can roll out over each side of the roof, and hey presto, job done!  Little bit of string through the hooks to hold it onto the roof and bob is your uncle!

I have also done the paint, which worked, but looked naff, and was a b*gger to clean off in the winter!

Cheaper still; take two long canes and roll sufficient 'fleece' onto one of them, and fix the other to the loose end of the fleece.

Staple the full one to the green house (near the ridge) so that there is sufficient space to revolve, pull the loose end down, and tie it in at the bottom at the eaves.

Hey presto a cheap DIY roller screen!

i cut up a walk in greenhouse (which was wrecked anyways) and tied it to the bolts on the inside of the roof and side.

it certainly does the job until tea time when the sun streams through the door and the end panels but i figure by then it's not hot enough to do much damage  ::)

I painted that white stuff on one year. Never, never again. Getting it off was a nightmare.

If you have some old net curtains, one possibility is to do another variation of Doris' blinds - just string them up with a bit of old rope/washing line/string.

One question though... must the shading always go on the outside, or is it equally effective slung on the inside? You'll still get shade, but has the full heating effect already occurred because the light rays have passed through the glass?

I'm only going to be able to shade from the inside, so look forward to hearing from others apart from KP who've done so....

Many thanks.

I used fleece inside last year, attached with those plastic press-stud thingies that fit into the metal frame, and nothing got overcooked.

If you've got automatic vents, be sure to cut vertical slits in the fleece to allow for the 'arms' coming inwards when the vent opens.

Good thinking about the vents.

Trouble with any 'fixed' system is that you miss some 8hrs a day good light.

But if you can't be there all the time, better safe than sorry?

And would you believe it?? Bought a new length this am - only to find it was a metre short. Too busy to think!! But this end only gets the late afternoon sun.

The toms are shaded & the peppers & aubs on the right like the heat.

Forgot to mention attachment - depends upon the greenhouse build. But this is our lean-to.

Now that you all got your shading sorted for the 2 days of Summer,  I do hope that you have taken it off again for the cold week ahead??

brrrr......you're so right, Tim. A few days ago I took all the toms destined for the open garden out of the g/house into cold frames.....just trudged back to the 'house with them - holiday over! And they weren't even there long enough to send me a postcard ::)

Only just dawned on me - my shading over the vents keeps the auto-opener cooler & limits the opening - to some extent self-defeating!

Even with 24 vents & that shading, the temperature has been 85F!
