Growing veg on compost heap
« on: April 29, 2006, 15:28:28 »
I've read about growing pumpkins on a compost heap- just wondered if they'd grow on half-rotted manure? Hate to see it sitting there doing nothing!

I would go ahead Caroline, - I think they will love it!   A man on our Site grows pumpkins and a variety of other veggies on his compost too and they seem to do very well. busy-lizzie

Hi caroline,  :)

I remembered that we wrote about hot beds a few weeks ago. I did a search and found this.

I have two leaf mould cages topped with horse muck on which I plan to grow hundred-weight pumpkins and my original plot-clearing compost heap is topped with the same mix and toasting under tarpaulins. This will be home for regular halloween pumpkins and maybe a marrow.

The baby squash plants are doing well in my potting shed.  ;D

Best of luck, Col

I grew courgettes on my manure stack last year -and that was shaving and only about 3 months old when they went in.  This year I 've got a soil stack and might put them in that.
