Fractions and degrees etc
« on: April 04, 2006, 21:49:13 »
Have you ever wondered how to get fractions and degrees on a forum post or email?    Very useful if you wanted to say something like "sow seeds at 1½ inches when the temperature is over 60ºF.

The commands are as follows:  ½  = Alt 171      ¼ = Alt 172       º  = Alt 248
² =Alt 253
There are many other signs but none that I would use very often as many are from the Greek alphabet and used mainly in maths.  Some could be handy if you are writing in French and want é (Alt 130) or á (Alt 160).

You must have the number lock on and use the numbers on the right and not those above the letters.

Or you could use your "Character Map" in your "System Tools" ;D ;)

Another alternative is to write your text using a standard text package eg MS Word ... then copy and paste. This has the advantage that at least you have more sophisticated editting tools available ...

Thanks for that Roy.  I think it might be fractionally quicker to type in Alt 171 for some of the numbers such as ½ or ¼.

It's a good idea of Curry's to type out a reply in word first and then copy and paste.  I haven't done that but if it is a long post or email, I make sure I copy it as I go along.  I would like a £ for everytime I have lost a message and had to start all over again.   ;D

Pauline you don't have to go through all that clicking once you have called up the 'Character Map' it can stay on your bottom tool bar until you have finished your letter, also 'Word' will then place it in your main 'Start Menu' window for easy access and it will remain there for about a week if you don't continue to use it, then it disappears and goes back to 'System Tools'. 8)

A great thing about using Word is that your text doesn't disappear each time you lose your connection, or move out of the forum to check somrething?
