Lobelia and Petunias
« on: March 27, 2006, 10:39:03 »
Help please.   :-\  A couple of days ago I sowed some bedding plant seeds in an unheated propogator and put them on the windowsill indoors to germinate.  I now find that I need the room for my tomatoes which need putting into larger pots.  If I move the propogator with the bedding plant seeds to my unheated greenhouse, will they survive if we have a frost?

Hi there!  Generally speaking Lobelia is much tougher than Petunias.  I work in a nursery and our Lobelia in under glass with no heat but is fleeced at night and the petunias are kept in a heated area at about 14 degrees.  On saying that, the night times temperatures seem to be much milder now.  You could always bring them in if it looked like it was going to be really chilly.
Is your greenhouse insulated?
Hope this helps.
Susie  :)

Susie, my greenhouse isn't insulated but I have plenty of bubblewrap in the shed.  I am waiting for an order of fleece to arrive as well so could use that and the bubblewrap if we start getting frosts again.

I am pleased to hear that lobelia is a bit more hardy than petunias as I have sown all my seed but do have some petunia left.  At the end of the day, I suppose I could always buy a few bedding plants if I lost them but would not be able to replace the tomato plants which are varieties not found in my local nurseries.

I see you are new Susie.  Welcome to the forum.  Everyone is helpful, chatty and pleasant on here and I am certain that you will enjoy the forum even if we are all a bit scatty at times.

Thanks for your help Susie.   Best wishes from Pauline

Not as a rule no, we ask the parents to leave them in a cage whilst they look round ;)

Welcome Susie. Great fun here,  and best of all even novices like me can learn a lot.
Aha with your knowledge sounds like you will be able to help some of us with our problems. Enjoy

Susie      Don't want to go off topic too much but you just do not know how near the truth you are when you ask Mrs KP. "Are you a NUT?"
