Hello everyone, sorry in advance if I've posted this in the wrong place.
I've put our name down for an allotment but we're at number 16 in the list, so I have a feeling we're in for a long wait!!!
Lucky for us we have a large garden, so for the first-time we're having a go at growing out own veg.
We're in the process of making some raised beds and some veg we will grow in containers. We have 3 young children who can't wait to start sowing.
Just wanted to say hello.
And I'm sure I'll be asking for lots of advice in the future.
So thank you all in advance.

Welcome TheGrowingFamily! Hope you get an allotment soon. In the meantime it will be great clearing your garden for veggies this year. Really brilliant that the children will be involved. I am doing a Newsletter for our Allotment Society and I have just done an article about a mother on our site with a diabetic son, who wants to involve him in growing his own veggies too. It seems to be a growing trend, and is really heartening that more parents are encouraging their children to get planting. We have a waiting list of 45 on our Site, where a few years ago there was no waiting list at all, so it shows how popular, growing your own veg is becoming. Ask away with your questions as we have some really good gardeners on A4A who will be happy to help I am sure. :D busy_lizzie

Dont have an allottment but grow veg in the garden for myself and daughter! She is now 9 and a confirmed vegaholic! and is often found grazing in the veg plot, so i have to grow enough for her to snack on!

Yes, welcome tgf. No longer have an allotment plot :'( :'( :'( but am now preparing the back end of my none too spacious garden for veg planting (with a small amount of lawn). Welcome again.

Thanks again for all the kind replies.
Just been on the phone to the council, to see how I'm doing on the waiting list ::) and I'm now number 15 in the list, Ive been on the list since November! so I've moved 1 place since then, looks like I'm in for a long wait.
Glad I've got the garden to start with, should be finishing the raised beds this weekend, fingers crossed, hope the weather holds out.
So I will post some pic's of my garden and my new raised beds.

A quick question:
The turf I've dug up, can it be placed in the raised beds with soil put on top or would you get rid of it and start with fresh soil?

Sorry if this is a really silly question, but as you can guess I'm a novice!

Yes, after removing any perennial weeds, put the turves down upside down (soil upwards) and cover with newspaper or cardboard (which you can plant thru) then a good 6 inches of compost and/or leafmould and/or nutritious mulch. This is the 'lazy sod' method, and makes for a good rich soil when the turves have rotted down, but you can use it straight away. A lot of us seem to do this: do a search on 'lazy sod' and you'll see quite a few variations on the method. Good luck moving up the queue ::) :)

I like the sound of 'lazy sod' gardening!
I think I will give it a whirl. I won't need as much soil, compost etc to fill the beds with if I put the turf in. Well thats my plan.

In Warrington. I've been greedy and put my name down for 2 of the 6 possible sites here. And I'm number 15 in the list for both of them. ::)
Not far from Manchester but a bit far too travel for an allotment, what with school run and that ;).

I got my allotment late last year and joined Allotments 4 all. I have been given a lot of encouragement and advice over the past few months and I am sure you will do too.
